Save a Prayer – Duran Duran

Posted in A Day in the Life, Music Blogosphere, Songs I'm Grateful For 2009 | No Comments »

Duran Duran’s “Save a Prayer” is a late addition to this month’s Songs That I’m Grateful For”. While today is Monday, November 9th, I admit that this month’s blogs have already been written.

But after reading on the Hypebot blog today that Duran Duran’s John Taylor believes that Twitter dilutes musicians’ creativity, I was reminded of their song “Save a Prayer”, which I still have to admit IS a song that I’m grateful for.

Of course, after reading John Taylor’s article for the BBC, I then had an internal debate of whether or not to add this song to this month’s blog. While my pride did not want me to give any attention to his backward-thinking remark, I learned that my Twitter friend @marjae was unfamiliar with Duran Duran. So while she’s probably a bit younger than me anyway, the teacher in me insisted that I add this song.

And of course, it’s always good to remember that we do not have to like a teacher in order to learn from him.

Pink Moon – Nick Drake

Pink Moon by Nick Drake is another song by a special singer/songwriter who left this earth too soon. Like many people, the first I heard of this song was in a VW commercial. It’s a gorgeous song. Better late than never.

Miss You Most – Gordon Chambers

Posted in Songs I'm Grateful For 2009 | No Comments »

Miss You Most by Gordon Chambers is a song that many performers can identify with: having to perform with a broken heart. Many folks know him as a gifted songwriter, but he’s an amazing singer as well. I had the pleasure of vocal training with Gordon this summer, and I love how he encouraged me to stretch my voice.

Extraordinary Machine – Fiona Apple

Extraordinary Machine by Fiona Apple is a song that’s almost a theme song for me: “Be kind to me or treat me mean, I’ll make the most of it. I’m an extraordinary machine!”

Personalized Songs

Personalized songs are here – just in time for the holidays!

Personalized Songs
Me, chatting about personalized songs on Twitter

But wait, you say – “Carla, I didn’t know you recorded personalized songs!”

Well, HA! – that makes two of us! I suppose that’s not entirely true, as I have written my share of personalized songs for the Songs of Love charity for children with chronic and terminal illnesses. But I had no idea that regular folks would be interested in having a personalized song written for them. Turns out that I was wrong.

Last week I was commissioned to write a song for a young girl’s Bat Mitzvah, and it came out beautifully. I hadn’t even met the young lady, and I even I moved to tears while writing this song. Her father had interviewed other members of the family to provide a comprehensive bio of what the girl of honor would like, and it was my job to put the sentiments into a song. The resulting song is titled “She Loves Her Family”, and I’ll be uploading a clip soon.

In addition to all of the information that was given to me, it was also requested that it be written to the tune of Taylor Swift’s tune “You Belong With Me”. It was a rush request, so I got it done in TWO DAYS! Her family had also commissioned a photo montage from a videographer, which was what the personalized song accompanied, and I can only imagine the laughter and tears that this presentation caused. It’s the kind of event that makes everyone feel all warm inside.

I consider it a great honor to write music for your special day, and I look forward to writing more personalized songs. So keep me in mind, as personalized songs can be commissioned for every occasion, such as:

* Wedding Anniversary
* Mother’s/Father’s Day
* Engagement
* Bar/Bat Mitzvah & Sweet Sixteen
* Baby’s First Lullaby
* Personalized Children’s Song
* Wedding
* Valentine’s Day
* Retirement
* Birthday
* Memorial
* Anything else you can think of!

If you’re interested in having a personalized song written, send an email via my contact form, and I’ll respond asap.

Happy Holidays!
