Video Interview with CLH by Manhattan Times’ Sherry Mazzocchi

My next show is Thursday, July 19th at 7:30pm at Washington Heights’ Word Up Bookstore – my new favorite place to play!

Let’s talk about community and niches for a minute.

As you know, I live in New York City, where there are no lack of musicians and other creative folk. For my latest gig at Word Up, I deliberately chose it because it’s in my hood, Washington Heights.

If you’re a musician in NYC, you know how challenging it can be to get folks to come out to a gig, or to get press when there are so many other things going on on any given night.

BUT, by choosing to gig in my own neighborhood, I not only had a good crowd, I also got press in the Manhattan Times, the local paper for Washington Heights, Harlem, and Inwood. I mean the article was even written in English and Spanish. Even better, the writer Sherry Mazzocchi, did the interview on camera, so there’s a different video version of our time together (check it out below).

When’s the last time I got that from The New York Times? Uh… how bout never? ;-))

So you see, it pays to nurture your neighborhood!

I know – it’s been quiet on the musical front for me lately, but I have a slew of gigs coming up. My next performance will be at Washington Heights’ Word Up Community Bookstore on Thursday, May 3rd. What’s even cooler is that I won’t just be performing on that Thursday, but for the next 8 Thursdays after that. In other words, my first MUSICAL RESIDENCY!!!

What’s even cool than that is that I’ll be livestreaming these gigs, and filming the pilot for a new TV Show!! Lots of things cooking over here!

Stay tuned!!

CXCW 2012: St Patrick’s Day by John Mayer cover by Carla Lynne Hall

I didn’t go to South by Southwest this year, but I did attend Couch by Couchwest, the virtual music conference “where the only hipster is you”. As today is St. Patrick’s Day, I chose to do an a capella cover of “St. Patrick’s Day” by John Mayer. The song has nothing to do with being Irish or green beer, but I like it just the same.

From the Couch by Couchwest blog:
CXCW is the slackers alternative to SXSW. During the week of March 11-18, 2012 musicians from around the world submit videos recorded on a couch, porch, bathroom…anywhere but the stage…for our enjoyment from the comfort of our living rooms. We hope to bring together as many people as possible who are stuck home while all their friends are stuck in the crowds of Austin, TX. So crack open a beer, crank up the volume, and enjoy the couch!

Yoko Ono’s “Secret Piece” Performed for Make Music NY 2011 by Carla Lynne Hall

Here’s my Make Music NY 2011 video. I’m singing Yoko Ono’s “Secret Piece” for the birds at Central Park. Make Music New York is an annual event where people celebrate the Summer Solstice (June 21st, the first day of summer) by singing all over New York City.

Since I showed up for the 5am sunrise singing, I was fortunate to meet Aaron Friedman, the founder of Make Music New York, so of course I had to interview him! I had known that he was one of the organizers, but he’s actually the FOUNDER of Make Music New York. So the early bird really does get the worm! 😉

My Last Original Gig of 2010: SIP Lounge, Nov. 14th

Sip Lounge Pumpkin

2010 has been a great year for performing, and I’m happy to say that I surpassed my goal of 10 gigs this year. Between my original gigs, choir gigs, band and hospital gigs, I was a singing FOOL – just the way I like it!

But alas, this weekend marks my last scheduled original music NYC gig of 2010. Anything can happen at the last minute, of course, but as far as I know, this is it!

If you’re in NYC, come celebrate 2010 with me at SIP Lounge, a fun & cozy hangout spot near Columbia University. I’ll be performing as part of their Acoustic Soul Lounge/Something Different Performance Series:

My Next NYC Gig: “Soul in the Round” at The Underground on Oct. 6th

Posted in A Day in the Life, Gigs | No Comments »

Carla Hall & Friends for LIFEBeat, NYC 1999

I am very excited about my next gig, “Soul in the Round”, which takes place on Oct 6th at The Underground in NYC.

Many of the gigs that I’ve booked this year were presented by Make It Happen Entertainment, which is co-managed by Danny Brookings. At the last gig at Village Underground, rocker Jerome Jordan performed an acoustic set after mine, during which he mentioned how some of our songs had similar themes, and that we should do a gig together.

The light bulb went off in my head that we should do an acoustic show together, and perform “in the round”, Nashville-style. If you’re not familiar with this kind of performance, it’s when 4-5 songwriters share the stage at one time, taking turns singing their songs. It’s an intimate setting where songs and stories are shared, and the audience is treated to a one-of-a-kind evening. While I’ve seen pop and country songwriters perform “in the round”, I’ve never seen indie soul artists do this.

So while Jerome was doing his thing onstage, I told Danny about my idea for “Soul in The Round”. Not only did Danny love the idea, he immediately set a plan in motion. So now Make It Happen Entertainment will present its first “Soul in the Round” show! I’ll be sharing the stage with Jerome Jordan, Kiersten Gray, Khalil Madyun, and Ramoth Gilead, who are some of the top soul-folk/neo-soul/soul-rock performers in NYC.

This lineup is so fierce that I’d want to see it even if I wasn’t on it!
