If you attempted to visit Wikipedia today (January 18, 2012), you’ve noticed that the online encyclopedia is protesting the proposed SOPA and PIPA legislation. Actually, there are a few online sites that are blacked out in solidarity. Instead of blacking out my blog, I’ve chosen to use this day to increase awareness.
SOPA and PIPA are proposed legislation packages which have the potential to censor the internet and limit expression. As a creative person, I have to speak up and not be silent. I know that there are many people who just don’t know what this is about, or how it could affect them, so I want to at least offer some education on the subject.
On one of its few pages NOT blacked out today, Wikipedia explains:
SOPA and PIPA represent two bills in the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate respectively. SOPA is short for the “Stop Online Piracy Act,” and PIPA is an acronym for the “Protect IP Act.” (”IP” stands for “intellectual property.”) In short, these bills are efforts to stop copyright infringement committed by foreign web sites, but, in our opinion, they do so in a way that actually infringes free expression while harming the Internet.
If you are an artist, creator, maker, website designer, intellectual property owner, or anyone who wants to know more about this threat to online expression, please visit Wikipedia and Google to learn how your future freedoms could be affected.
Wikipedia makes it easy for you to contact representatives in Congress by just entering your zip code. You’ll immediately be given contact form links, as well as social media contacts for your Congress reps. It doesn’t take long to send them your thoughts. Everyone’s voice adds up.
End Piracy, Not Liberty

Thursday, Jan 12th (tomorrow!) marks the launch of my SELL YOUR MUSIC! Workshop Series in NYC with “Setting the Stage for Music Success”.
AND I’m offering a special deal: Sign up for tomorrow’s “Setting the Stage for Music Success” for the regular price of $40. And if you like the first class, you can purchase the remaining classes for $60, so you still get the 4 workshops for $100 special!
Tomorrow’s class lays the foundation for a successful music career, and I’ll be sharing the strategies used by independent musicians who are making a living from their music. Because this session covers the necessary “nuts and bolts”, I consider it the most important workshop of the series.
While I also consider the fan-building, music marketing, and money-making sessions important, in my opinion, everything builds upon the foundation principles covered in the first session, including:
• How to Create Your VISION of Music Success
• How to BUILD A TEAM
• SONGWRITING SECRETS
• TIME MANAGEMENT Tips
• How to Create a Successful Artist MINDSET
Hope to see you at tomorrow’s class!

This week’s Rock Star Life Lessons podcast features Dale Adams, owner and operator of Architek One, a music management and marketing company based in Atlanta.
During our chat, Dale and I discuss the possibilities for music marketing using mobile devices, which kinda blew my mind at the time (when I still had a regular cell phone).
Since this 2010 interview, Apple’s iPad (and other mobile tablets) has become popular for multiple uses, I finally upgraded to an Android Smartphone, and I always think back to this conversation with Dale, as his predictions came true. Tune into this interview for some mobile music marketing inspiration!

At the time of my writing on January 4, 2012, many folks are on “Beyonce Baby Watch”, waiting for news of Beyonce’s first baby. And what a coincidence that today’s scheduled interview is with Tina Knowles, Beyonce’s Mom!
In today’s interview, Tina Knowles talks about what it’s like to have a family member helping you with your music career, and offers suggestions on what to look for if you’re considering hiring your dad/brother/cousin to be your manager, stylist, producer, etc.

Ahhh, it’s December 31st, 2011, and I’m in the mood to repost one of the most popular posts on this blog: How to Make a Vision Board.
I’m currently in Atlanta with my family, who’ve asked me to organize a Vision Board Party tomorrow for the New Year. The family here is pretty large, so it’s gonna be fun. To create a vision board in a group setting can be powerful, as you get the benefit of group energy. If you have kids, this is also a fun project that you can do as a family, and is also a fun arts and crafts project. If you’re spiritual or religious, feel free to say a group prayer afterwards to seal the intentions that you set.

How to Make a Vision Board
by Carla Lynne Hall
Creating a Vision Board is a powerful way to set your musical intentions for the next year. As today is New Year’s Eve, it is a powerful day for setting intentions, but you can make a Vision Board any day of the year!
What is a Vision Board?
Also known as a Treasure Map, it’s basically a collage of pictures and words that represent your goals. The purpose of a Vision Board is to inspire you, and keep you on track. If you have a band, this can be be a fun project to complete together.
Step One – Set Your Intentions
What do want to accomplish in the New Year? Here are some ideas to get you started:
* Get a new job (or a raise. or a promotion, etc)
* Meet your soulmate
* Get married
* Take an awesome vacation
* Learn a new language
Step Two – Find and/or Create Pictures to Represent Your Goals
One way is to get a stack of old magazines, and cut out pictures and captions that represent your goal.

Another way is to go to Google Images and flickr and search to your heart’s content. Print out pictures and sentences that are meaningful to you.
When using Google to search for images, think about your outcome. For example, if you want to find pictures to represent your soulmate, use search terms like “kissing”, “dancing”, “holding hands”, or whatever else you imagine you and your soulmate doing.
Be sure to include color pictures of yourself!
Step Three – Make Your Collage
With a glue stick (probably the cleanest method), or other adhesive, arrange your pictures and captions on poster board, or a bulletin board. You can also use a sketchbook or scrapbook if you like.
Let your imagination be your guide!
Step Four – Keep Your Vision Board In View
The whole point of a Vision Board is to keep your eye on your vision. If you prefer to keep your Vision Board in a scrapbook, be sure to review it often. One of my friends had her Vision Board framed and hung on her living room wall, which I thought was a nice touch. The cliche is true: Out of sight, out of mind!
Another idea that I learned from musician Luna Jade is to create a Vision Board on your computer desktop. This is a great way to keep your vision within sight!
Here are some of the pics from one of my older Vision Boards. If you’re handy with Photoshop, you can also do cool things like put your photo on the cover of Rolling Stone!

Thanks to the magic of flickr, I was also able to find pics of other Vision Board examples to give you more ideas:

Be as creative as you want, and have fun with your Vision Board!
